Alan R. Hancock has served as trial judge
for Island/San Juan Superior Court since January 1989.
In addition to his other duties, he presides over Island
County's Juvenile Drug Court. He currently chairs the State
Supreme Court's Ethics Advisory Committee, and is a member
of the Board of Trustees of the Superior Court Judges' Assocation
(SCJA). He is a past chair of the SCJA's Ethics Committee
and Family and Juvenile Law Committee, and has served on
a number of other judicial commissions and committees.
He is a recipient of the Washington State Bar Association's
Outstanding Judge Award "in recognition of the commitment
to the principles of fairness and excellence," and co-founded
the Island County/Stanwood Community Public Health and Safety
Network.
Judge Hancock was born, raised, and still lives in
Coupeville, Washington. He graduated magna cum laude from
Western Washington University in 1973 and obtained his
Juris Doctor degree from the University of Washington
School of Law in 1976.
Vickie
I. Churchill was first elected judge in 1996 and has served
as judge for the Superior Court for Island and San Juan
counties since January 1997. In 2006, she was elected by
her peers as President-Elect for the Superior Court Judges'
Association (SCJA) for Washington, which comprises 187 superior
court judges statewide. She will serve as SCJA President
in 2008 and SCJA Past President in 2009.
Since July 2001,
she has been actively involved on the Board of Judicial
Administration (BJA), the policy-making board for more than
400 elected judges in Washington. In addition, Judge
Churchill has served as SCJA treasurer (2004-05) and has
been a member of serveral SCJA committees, including technology,
education, rural courts, and legislative. She has
taught at the Washington State Judicial College several
times.
Born and raised in Hereford, Texas,
Judge Churchill came to Whidbey Island in 1972 and has resided
here continuously since 1976. She graduated with honors
from the University of Missouri - Columbia with a Bachelor
of Journalism degree in 1969. She returned to school
in September 1984 to study law and obtained her Juris Doctor
degree with honors in December 1986. She earned several
honors at law school, including winning the Tausend Moot
Court competition. She attended the National Judicial
College in 1998.
