Filing
for Office:
Information about
filing for office can be found in Title 29A of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW 29A):
"Procedures for Filing for Elective Office in
Washington State" is available from the Office of the Secretary of State, 520 Union
Ave SE, Olympia, WA 98504-0220.
Declaration & Affidavit of Candidacy:
Almost all candidates are required to submit
a "Declaration and Affidavit of Candidacy" when filing for public office. This
form is printed by the Public Disclosure Commission, which distributes it directly and
through the Secretary of State's office and the County Auditor's office.
Candidates for Precinct Committee Officer
file a different form, available from the County Auditor's Office.
In Island County, candidates
for the state legislature must file with the Secretary of State in Olympia because the 10th Legislative District encompasses parts of Skagit and Snohomish Counties,
as well as all of Island County.
All federal and statewide elective office
candidates must file with the Secretary of State's office in Olympia.
Candidates filing for any of the above
mentioned Offices may file on-line with the Secretary of State.
All countywide elective office candidates in
Island County must file with the Island County Auditor.
Most offices require a filing fee. The law
has provision for indigent candidates. (RCW 29A.24.091)
There are time limits for the decision to
withdraw a declaration of candidacy. (RCW 29A.24.131)
Write-in candidates may file a Declaration of
Write-in Candidacy. This must be filed no later than the day before the election or
primary. A write-in candidate need not file a declaration, but there are differences in
the required ballot markings. These are explained in RCW 29A.24.311 and RCW 29A.24.320.
