All documents MUST be completed in black ink only! You will be required to sign an Affidavit swearing to the fact that, to the best of your knowledge, you are:
The Affidavit form must be signed in front of a Deputy Auditor in our office, or by a Notary Public. You will also complete the Department of Health Certificate of Marriage application form, however, this form must not be signed until your marriage date. Ladies, please note: ALL documents should be completed and signed with your current name. Getting married does not automatically change your name, it merely allows you to change it if you so choose. Information Required to Apply for a License Both the prospective Bride and Groom will be required to provide Social Security Numbers, date of birth and place of birth, as well as the name and place of birth of her/his father and the maiden name and place of birth of her/his mother. There is a $54.00 non-refundable fee for the marriage license application payable at the time of application. This must be paid in cash or by check. Credit cards are not accepted. This fee is authorized and established by the State Legislature. Copies of marriage certificates and applications All records are kept in the Recording Department. Certified copies are $3.00, regular photocopies are $1.00. |
Who can perform a ceremony? State law prescribes who can perform marriage ceremonies. Under RCW26.04.050, active and retired justices of the Supreme Court, judges of the Court of Appeals, judges of the Superior Courts, Superior Court Commissioners, and any regularly licensed or ordained minister or any priest of any church or religious denomination, and judges of court of limited jurisdiction. Washington State does not license ministers. Ministers from any state may perform the marriage, but a marriage license issued in Washington can be used only in Washington. The bride and groom may not perform their own ceremony. There is no prescribed way in which a ceremony must be performed. Proxy marriages are not allowed. A marriage license issued by a Washington State County can be used only in Washington State. State law requires that marriages be performed in the presence of two witnesses. The law does not specify the minimum or maximum age of the witnesses. Witnesses should be competent, and it is recommended that they be of an age to be fully aware of their responsibilities in the marriage ceremony. The officiant has thirty (30) days to return the signed and completed Dept. of Health Certificate of Marriage form and copy number 3 of the Marriage Certificate to our office. (Copy number 2 is your keepsake copy). Once we have received these documents, you can get Certified copies of your Marriage Certificate for $3 each, by coming into our office or mailing your request, along with the appropriate fees. If you require Certified copies right away, you can bring the paperwork back to our office personally, instead of waiting for the officiant to mail it in. All marriage records are a matter of public record and must be readily accessible for public inspection. We cannot withhold any information from the public, including media and businesses catering to prospective marriage partners or newlyweds. The one exception to this is for a person enrolled in Washington's Address Confidentiality program. Once a marriage has been recorded, it cannot be "un-recorded."
