EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND PREPAREDNESS TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

DEM is the County's coordinator for emergency training.  DEM coordinates with local, state and federal agencies that sponsor a wide range of individual and group training courses.  These courses come in a variety of formats including self study and traditional classroom instruction.  Most courses are offered free of charge to qualified students.  Some courses are eligible for college credit.

Other sources of training are the Washington State Emergency Management Division (EMD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)The Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross also offers a series of emergency and disaster preparedness and response classes.  Other groups include Snohomish Health District and Western Washington Interagency Training Zone.

Upcoming Local Training Opportunities:

 

Third Thursday Training

course overviews in the areas of incident/event emergency management and operations.  there is no charge and open to every one.  Normally 9:30 AM to 12 noon.  New schedule will be out in January.

**Third Thursday training will be discontinued in 2012.**

Second Wednesday Preparedness nights.

In addition the DEM is also conducting Disaster Preparedness classes on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 6:30-8:30pm in the Island County Commissioners’ Hearing Room, Coupeville.  There is no charge for the classes which include information on preparedness, response, and recovery in various scenarios.  There will be a different topic each month to include earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, winter storms, power outages, readiness, planning, communications, etc.

Next second Wednesday night scheduled will be February 8th.

Health Related training

Nurses on the Front Line:  Preparing for and Responding to Emergencies and Disasters

This learning tool may also provide some insight for professions other than nursing, as well. Medical Reserve Corps unit leaders and volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of this course and all the resources available on the site.

Electronic Core Disaster Life SupportT (eCDLST) Course.

The AMA Center for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response (CPHPDR) invites all members of the Medical Reserve Corps to take the newly released electronic Core Disaster Life SupportT (eCDLST) course.  The 4-hour course was developed with funding from the Department of Homeland Security and is offered at no charge.  The course comprises nine modules, a pre-test, and a post-test.
