ISLAND COUNTY

DECEMBER 27, 1999
The

including Diking Improvement District #4.

Technology
Committee
Commissioner Thorn
addressed the need for a county
technology committee, an advisory
committee to the Board. It was
his thought that this would be a group
of about 5 members willing and
interested in committing time and effort to look into the policy for
technology as the County moves ahead,
define the relationships better,
work to resolve concerns each department has and point the County
where it should go in the future with
technology. A lot is in place, but it
is incomplete. A beginning point would be to look at how the
county does business, what are the interfaces needed and how does that
come together through the technology,
and “how do we do business in Island County?”. He sees this as something that in the long run will be a stabilizing influence for the county and
provide assistance to the Board in looking at where the county needs to
go.
Commissioner Shelton
thought the committee a perfect idea but suggested it would be a mistake
to focus only on immediate
problems. Limiting the size of the
committee is a good idea, but saw a need for representation from the appointed
departments, in addition to Cathy Caryl
or her representative.
Other pointed brought
up by Elected Officials and Commissioners included:
·
the need to look at how this technology is
used throughout the county in all aspects
·
a need early on for a survey of non-County based systems used by County offices
·
identify restrictions [access to records/confidentiality issues]
·
prioritization issues
·
look at other systems, not just counties, but
some business models as well, to see how they handle customers and
interface with others.
