Presentation:
Robin Hertlein presented the outline of the Community Process to the guests and board members, explaining the major points of the 3-year cycle:

  1. Developing a community coalition
  2. Creating a shared vision
  3. Assessing the health of the community
  4. Prioritizing and analyzing the identified health issues
  5. Implementing a community health plan addressing the selected issues
  6. Evaluating the process and outcomes

Robin continued by explaining the work of the CHAB members during the past year and how they were able to distill the information gathered from a variety of sources during the preceding year through a statistically sound consolidation process, coming up with 15 priority interest issues which were then categorized into four major topics:

  1. Early Childhood Support and Parent Education
  2. Mental Health in Island County
  3. Chronic Disease/Physical Activity
  4. Prevention & Screening

Health Action Teams were then formed around these issues, and point papers on these subjects prepared for presentation to the Board of Health and to the public at this meeting.

Special Health Report brochures were passed out and summary presentations were made on the following topics:

Linda Lee Martens Health Hero of Island County Awards, 2002

Linda Lee Martens Health Hero Awards are presented annually by the Board of Health and CHAB in recognition of those unsung heroes who volunteer their time in service to our community. Their acts of kindness may be to individuals, to activities, or to the community at large. The award is named in honor of the late Linda Lee Martens who was involved in so many community service activities at the local and national level.

The Awards Committee members presented the 2002 recipients of the Linda Lee Martens Health Hero of Island County 2002 awards to the following eleven individuals and agencies:

Amy Ayers was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her many years of dedicated service to the community. Don Lee was recognized for his 15+ years of volunteer work on water resource issues; Megan Roosen-Runge, a South Whidbey High School student, received the Youth Health Hero Award for her many community service activities; and Patty Willson accepted the award in the Agency category for Friends of Friends.

Certificates of Recognition were awarded to Hideki Itotani who plays classical guitar for patients at our local hospital; to Vivian Rodgers-Decker for her work in establishing Gifts From The Heart food bank in Central Whidbey; to Lynn Willeford for initiating the Friends of Friends Medical Support Fund which offers financial help with medical-related bills for residents on South Whidbey; to Cheryl Torres for her work with multiple community health (spiritual and physical) support services in Coupeville; to Jim Ramler for his 2,500+ hours of volunteer work with Day Break, a senior adult day care and respite center; to Colleen Lura for her years of volunteer service in hospice care, and to Dawn Keith representing Soroptimist International of Oak Harbor for their Vial of Life project.

Adjourn:  Following the award presentations, Robin Hertlein congratulated the award recipients and thanked the CHAB members who had worked long hours in preparing the brochures and presentations, and especially Carrie McLachlan, administrative to CHAB (and Community Assessment & Development Director for the Island County Health Department) for the long hours of collating information and assisting CHAB in this annual presentation.

Board of Health Chair Mac McDowell then thanked those present for attending, and offered a special thanks to Scott Rhine, CEO of Whidbey General Hospital and his staff for hosting this annual dinner meeting. The meeting was then adjourned at 7:14 p.m.
