Health Department Report:
Dr. Roger Case presented a brief report on Monkey Pox. At the current time there have been 81 cases reported in the U.S. This is the first time that there has been a case reported in our country. The disease was brought into the U.S. by way of an imported Giant Gambesian Rat through an exotic animal dealer in Wisconsin. The disease is described as looking somewhat like smallpox. Dr. Case went on to say that local residents should rather be more concerned about Hantavirus, which is carried by field mice. An abbreviated surveillance program conducted by the Navy Base a few years ago at Deception Pass Park detected the presence of Hantavirus in a few of the mice they had trapped. However, no Hantavirus disease has been identified in Island County.
Adjourn: There being no further business, Commissioner Mac McDowell adjourned the meeting at 1:36 p.m. The next regularly scheduled Board of Health will be July 21, 2003 at the usual time and location.
Submitted: Roger S. Case, MD, Executive Secretary to the Board
