Island County Community Snap Shot:

Our Talented Youth —  In the Arts:
  • Summer Youth Drama Program — County-Wide
  • Coupeville Art Center Art Classes
  • Annual Community Musical — South Whidbey
  • Regionally recognized musicians and composers in the Everett Symphony Orchestra, Port Townsend Jazz Camp Competition, and award-winning high school bands
Our Talented Youth —  In Sports:
  • This school year 1053 students are participating in sports.
    – South Whidbey Girls Cross Country Team placed 2nd in state
    – Coupeville Boys Basketball Team finished 4th in district
    – Oak Harbor Wrestling Team was first in the state
Our Talented Youth —  In School:
  • National Bridge Building winners from South Whidbey
  • Odyssey of the Mind teams go to national finals
  • Seven National Merit Scholars from Island County in 1995
Alcohol and Drug Use:
  • 58% of 6th graders report no alcohol use, 92% report no drug use.(1)
  • 15% of 12th graders report no alcohol use, 39% report no drug use.(1)
Teen Pregnancy, under 18 years of age:
  • In 1992 there were 32 births to teens in Island County.(2)
  • In 1995 there were 21 births to teens in Island County.(2)
Domestic Violence:
  • In 1992 there were 154 domestic violence arrests.(3)
  • In 1994 there were 224 domestic violence arrests.(3)
Child Abuse:
  • In 1992 there were 1021 victims in child abuse and neglect reports.(4)
  • In 1995 there were 1188 victims in child abuse and neglect reports.(4)

Island County Community Snap Shot:

Our Healthy Youth:
  • 79% of 6th graders participate in activities outside school.(1)
  • 83% of 6th graders report not riding in a car with someone who has been drinking alcohol or using drugs.(1)
  • 77% of 8th graders report exercising for 30 minutes 3-7 days per week.(1)
  • 77% of 6th and 8th graders report wearing a seat belt most of the time or always.(1)
  • 75% of 10th graders saw a physician for an exam in the last year.(1)
  • 67% of 12th graders report participating in school activities.(1)
  • 90% of 12th graders report wearing a seat belt most of the time or always.(1)

 Conclusions:  A challenge to our community…

  • Every child deserves respect.
  • Every child deserves a safe, loving home.
  • Every child deserves an opportunity to be a successº in sports, theater, music, arts, community service, school, life…

In 1994 legislators created networks across the state of local citizens working to strengthen and support children and families in communities. Our Island County/ Stanwood Public Health and Safety Network has funding for local programs and invites you to help with spending priorities.
