At their
first meeting in September 2002, EHAT
began to review over 100 issues
that had been compiled in Island
County over several years. The
team narrowed the list of issues to
seven broad categories: Air,
Conservation and Development,
Food Safety, Infectious Disease, Public
Policy, Solid and Hazardous Waste,
and Water. During the
years that followed, the EHAT analyzed these
issues, developed locally appropriate
indicators and standards, and created
issue profiles on four issues:
Illegal Dumping and Littering, A
Walkable Island County, West Nile
Virus, and Arsenic in Drinking
Water. Next,
the team set priorities for action and
developed action plans for its top two
priority issues--illegal
dumping/littering and a walkable Island
County. EHAT
is now implementing a multi-faceted
illegal dumping/littering action plan,
which has education, economic, and
enforcement components. EHAT is
also finalizing an action plan to help
create a more Walkable Island County!
