IMPLEMENTATION FOR ROUTINE
USE OF HEPATITIS A VACCINE Two
doses of hepatitis A vaccine can prevent the illness In July 2000, the Immunization Program began supplying hepatitis A vaccine
for routine immunization of children ages two to 18 in the following 13 Washington
counties: Asotin, Chelan, Clark, Cowlitz, Douglas, Grays Harbor, King, Klickitat, Mason,
Skamania, Spokane, Thurston, and Yakima. These 13 counties have a disease incidence of
> 20/100,000 which is acknowledged to be a high incident rate. These counties are
encouraged to actively promote the routine use of hepatitis A vaccine. In the 26 other Washington counties not experiencing these high rates of hepatitis A, the vaccine will be available upon request of parents after consultation with their health care providers. ACIP has recommended consideration of routine vaccination of all children in states, counties, and communities with rates exceeding the 1987-1997 national average ,i.e., greater than or equal to 10 but less than 20 cases per 100,000 population. That would include Island County. Hepatitis A vaccine will continue to be available for all children 2-18 years of age statewide who are in a high-risk group as identified by the ACIP (American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Pacific Islanders, selected Hispanic communities, certain religious communities, those living in communities where there are high rates of hepatitis A, travelers, males who have sex with other males, injecting drug users, and individuals working with non-human primates).
