Public Health launches "Stop Germs, Stay Healthy" campaign*

ISLAND COUNTY, WA - January 12, 2005:   Island County Public Health has joined in the state-wide launching of a "Stop germs, stay healthy" campaign to promote ways people can protect themselves and others from the viruses that cause many of our contagious diseases.

The "Stop germs, stay healthy" campaign consists of a television public service announcement (PSA) that is airing on local stations, plus an interactive web page with an entertaining quiz and a game to promote good health manners.  Visit the "Stop germs, stay healthy" web page at the following website: www.metrokc.gov/health/stopgerms/

These tools offer practical and entertaining ways to learn about health issues and how to stay healthy, especially during the cold and flu season. Public Health recommends that everybody practice good health manners, including covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands frequently, and staying home when sick. These good health practices at work, school, home and other places are a proven way to reduce the chance you and others will get sick.

*The inevitable "pandemic flu" event (avian flu?) awaiting on the horizon has no effective vaccine (and will not be available for five or six months – or more – after it begins). Furthermore, only very limited supplies of an effective(?) antiviral agent are presently available. What can each individual do?   A lot of things:

1. Get your flu shot - and pneumonia shot if you are at risk or over 50
2. Cover your cough; wear a mask if you are coughing

[Mask being recommended by Is. Co. Health Officer]

3.
Wash your hands, do this frequently ...consider wearing washable light
cotton gloves when in public during flu season

4. Stay home if you are ill, avoid spreading disease at work
5. Avoid crowds if flu is prevalent in your area
6. Lay in supplies to last the duration (get a siege mind-set)

The time-tested measures of isolation and quarantine ("social distancing") will, at least initially, be our only effective means to combat and control spread of this very deadly disease.  Begin today to make these 6 practices second nature — they well may save your life! After all, you are responsible for your health. Not you your doctor... not your government... not someone else... YOU.
Your greatest asset lies between your ears... use it!
