Present:  Larry Hartman, DDS, Greg Olson, DDS, MaryJane Lungren, Island County Public Health, and Caroline Lokkins, chair

The group discussed our new SeaMar Community Health Centers Dental Clinic in Oak Harbor.  Caroline offered her copy of the July 22nd edition of The Whidbey News-Times that had an article about the clinic.

MaryJane noted that the Island County Smile Survey is nearing completion.  The last section needing data analysis is the one on the high school population.  Since the Washington State Department of Health does not survey this age group, Island County Public Health has to pay for the data analysis program.

Larry asked about soda in schools. The group discussed this.  Caroline also noted that this will be the second year for the nutritional guidelines for schools and so the fat and sugar contents of foods served will be lowered again.

Larry also asked about funding for the ABCD Program.   MaryJane noted that the funding from Island Thrift was finished and Public Health was using its Oral Health funds from the state to continue the program.  We are enrolling children, updating educational and other materials, and maintaining the database.

The group also discussed the San Juan ABCD Program.   With one dentist in Friday Harbor, there are concerns he won’t have enough appointments available for all of the children enrolling in ABCD.  There is another dentist interested in the program and whose office is in Friday Harbor.  We discussed ways for him to have the training.  We haven’t heard that the ABCD dentist on Lopez is having any problems.  No other dentists are interested at this time in San Juan County.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, 24 July 2007 at 7:00 pm in room 116 of the County Administration building in Coupeville. (Tentative schedule for the rest of 2007: Oct 25)

Submitted,
Caroline Lokkins
