Welcome to this Island County Supplement to the Regional Health Status Report!

The purpose of this supplement is to provide information about the separate geographic regions of Island County: North, Central, South Whidbey Island and Camano Island.

The health department is committed to community level health assessment, problem identification, and health planning. The department, with state and local funding, is acquiring the expertise and technology to obtain community level health and demographic information.

The Camano Community Mobilization Pilot Project, described in this booklet, is the first effort to involve community members in collection and analysis of health information, identification and prioritization of health concerns and development and implementation of a local community health plan. The extensive work of the Camano community provides a model for what can be accomplished in the other areas of the county. The report on the other geographic areas of the county is limited to selected census data, the behavioral risk factor telephone survey and a drinking water assessment. If the Camano Island Pilot Project is successful and funding is available, the project will be replicated in other areas of the county and similar information will be available for those communities.

The Regional Health Status Report for Island San Juan and Skagit Counties prepared by the Northwest Epidemiology Project contains detailed health information about Island County as a whole. It compares Island County health information to surrounding counties, as well as, Washington State.

Both documents will be useful as a basis for planning for the future of our community.

Island County Health and Human Services
