Whidbey
In Motion
Whidbey
in Motion (WHIM) was a physical
activity
coalition initiated in 2002 with funding from Regence Blue Shield
to support a three-year project to assist in removing barriers
to regular physical activity, stimulate the growth of participation
in current programs, and create new programs that increase the
number of individuals who participate in physical activities in
our communities.
WHIM
projects included:
● Trail
signs at City Beach in Oak Harbor. Signs show distance, length
of time it takes
to walk, and
encouragements for stretching and hydration. Also, kiosks at
Greenbank Farms,
sign posts for Deception Pass trails, and signs for the Camano
Waterfront trail.
●
Pedometers to participating school classrooms and South
Whidbey Senior Center
●
Support for reviewing and revising school wellness policies
and procedures
●
A website (now incorporated here)
●
A Physical Activity Newsletter "Whidbey In Motion
- Activity and Trail Guide" to
promote local
events, provide trail maps for island walking trails, and increase
community awareness
of the importance of incorporating regular physical activity
into daily life
●
Regular articles in the MarketPlace Journal
Although
the WHIM team has disbanded, Island County Public Health is sustaining
WHIM’s efforts through the Chronic Disease Prevention program
and the Northwest Physical Activity Coalition (NWPAC),
and has incorporated information from the WHIM website into this
program’s website.
