COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
for Island County

A Division of Island County Government  Today is:

The Comprehensive Plan is a guide for the county on how to approach growth and development.  It consists of ten elements or chapters and was adopted on September 28, 1998; effective December 1, 1998.  Washington State law requires that every jurisdiction have a comprehensive, long term plan for its future development.

The original Island County Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 1984. The Board of County Commissioners adopted a more comprehensive and integrated document in 1998.

Although the State establishes statutes governing plans and their preparation, the policies contained within the plans are left to local discretion. The overall direction of the Island County Comprehensive Plan is to provide for a balanced plan that effectively meets the needs of the public and is sensitive to economic, environmental and social conditions of the given community.
