A Solid Waste Overview
Everything you throw away is what we consider Solid Waste.
Yard and Kitchen Waste, Recyclables, Steel
Demolition and Construction Debris
Hazardous Wastes, Special Wastes -such as asbestos, hypodermic needles, and carcasses.
The goal of managing Solid Waste is to find uses for as many of these materials as feasible.
And what happens to garbage??
Whether you self-haul trash or have it picked up a the curb, it goes to the Gilliam County Landfill near Arlington, Oregon. This is a modern lined landfill with leachate and gas collection, and groundwater pollution monitoring.
Island County's garbage is centralized at the Island County Solid Waste Complex near Coupeville and compacted into shipping containers before being trucked to Seattle. The containers are piggy-backed onto Seattle's waste stream and sent by rail to Arlington. Island County ships 24,000 tons of trash each year.
Garbage collected from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island facilities and housing is transferred to long-haul containers on base and trucked to a the Regional Disposal Company landfill in Klickitat County, Washington.
